Slovakian artist roman ondák’s project is a living infographic, a plotting of visitors’ heights whose mean will become increasingly apparent over the four months at the temporary stedelijk. When we visited the exhibition, participants’ names were still readable, but already there was some overlap. soon there will be nothing but a dense black line circumscribing the room and only the outliers’ names will be legible.

The interactive work by roman ondák is a part of the current exhibition, 'taking place'at the temporary stedelijk (the stedelijk museum amsterdam).By addressing its history, the spatial and temporal conditions of the unfinished building and the ways in which artists use, occupy and animate museum spaces, 'taking place' shows works by local, national and international contemporary artists, who range from well-known and established figures to emerging artists.

A graduate of Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Tine De Ruysser moved to London to pursue an MA at the Royal College of Art where she is currently finishing her PhD.

While attending her jewellery design courses, inspired by Dutch artist Nel Linssen and keeping firmly in mind Paco Rabanne and Issey Miyake’s work, De Ruysser developed interesting projects based on folding metallic materials, pioneering an electroforming technique and creating wearable origami pieces like sculptural copper and polyester capes and bracelets that can be turned into bags.

The artist based on the same principle a project originally designed for a Bank of America exhibition: banknotes were created to replace gold, so, De Ruysser wondered, why not reusing them to make jewellery pieces?

The Parasitic Ring Series

This set of rings is about flipping the relationship between a ring and the hand. A traditional ring, solid band, is worn as a object of adornment; the hand is the higher power. Yet, in the series below, the hand is the host for a parasitic form; therefore, the rings become the higher power- taking over the hand and using it for life, emerging out of and living in the shadows of the hand. I was inspired by slime mold due to its form and nature of existence, feeding off of the microorganisms that live in the crevices of the surfaces it attacks.

Also, for the project that was assigned, we had to take four different types of metal, tube, stock, wire, and sheet and manipulate them to a point that could not be traced back to the original form. I knew I would be able to achieve forms which were similar to slime mold by a series of melting, hammering, and sculpting.

A patination was applied to the copper to create a disgusting, crusty, and rotting air to the piece. Some forms of slime mold, are brightly colored, yet I wanted to capitalize on the idea of the parasitic form, living over the body. I felt that if I used a bright color, the pieces would be interpreted in a positive way; by using dark colors, the pieces are perceived as a uncomfortable hinderance to the body.

Playing with materials

I knew many materials would be too fragile for the piece, but I wanted to play anyway, hoping that maybe something would pop up. I tried using gelatin which I had died with food coloring. The pour was easy and quick, but as expected, the material was too flimsy and broke apart with the slightest touch. Also, a dirt magnet!

Pure Wax

I had also tried using variations of beeswax and then beeswax mixed with gelatin; yet, beeswax is too fragile on its own and when mixed with gelatin, the two substances stay separated. Unsuccessful but fun!

The color of the wax is created by burning on a high heat- I was trying to get closer to the deep color of a honeycomb rather than the pure color of the wax itself.

I first made small silicone molds of each hexagon (six in total), then the wax injector was used to make multiples for the test piece. I learned that the way I poured my test piece created pockets of air under the concave structures, prohibiting the silicone from taking the correct shape. This was corrected in the pour of the actual mold.

Above are images of yet another try at making the concave structure for the solid hexagons. They ended up not working very well so I made the objects in Rhino and had them printed in transparent detail.

The corners of the pieces did not print so I filled them in with thin wax sheet.

Moving Forward with Hexagons

After some thought, I have officially decided to change the squares to hexagons. For one, they will create more stability- less sagging in the piece; also, the shape is more visually appealing and comes closer to that of a true honeycomb.

Above is a scanned image of the layout which I have drawn. Below is a shot of the piece in Rhino. I was playing with the hexagons undulating- yet, it isn't clear in the shot.

Below is a shot of the Plexi hexagon which I created to make a mold out of for Injection Molding; however, when I was trying to take the Plexi out of the cured epoxy mold, it was like chipping away at an ice block and I managed to crack the epoxy mold in multiple place.

With no time to waste, I decided to make a new set of hexagons (6 total- 3 varying sizes- 1 set solid, 1 set tube-like) out of Sculpey clay. Tomorrow I will be injecting with wax, not plastic, in hopes that I will have a more efficient construction when it comes to combining the individual hexagons into the shape of the neckpiece.

Thanks to the lovely John Shea, I have been able to have a first hand view and interaction with a used honeycomb! It is geometrically amazing- how nature can create something so precise and rhythmic, blows my mind. There are tiny flaws that intrigue me- the soft undulation of the varying heights as well as some bees which have been trapped and others who never grew, leaving their small confining space sealed. Also, there is a subtle glow which passes through the structure when a soft light is cast upon it.

UPDATES!

As a part of the second round of Project 1: To Contain, I am thinking of changing the structure of my piece as well as its format. As for the Structure, I am going to try beeswax; therefore, the act of wearing the piece will be a sensual interaction as well as being able to manipulate the wax to fall over the shoulders instead of bending and stretching the material.

In the first rendition of the project, there wasn't a cohesive transition from the back of the piece to the front. To solve this problem, I have designed a pattern that will eliminate the curves of the back and replace the line with angles. As you can see from the forms below, I will either keep the solid angular forms in the back (the first picture) or blend them throughout the front as well (the second picture).

I have also played with the idea of changing the squares to hexagons- to follow the honeycomb concept.

Hi everyone! I just finished the first part of Project 1 for Jewelry 3 here at Towson University. I would love to have some feedback on the piece- a massive virtual critique if you will. This project was a experiment for me, working with the silicone was new to me and I wasn't sure how its properties would translate so as you can see there is some shape disfigurement but that can be changed!
The aim of the first part of the project was to create a container using die forms. The following parts are to recreate some of the piece with an injection mold and a biopolymer.

My goal of the project was to create a different means of containing small objects that
will be worn on the body. I was inspired by the geometry and use of a honeycomb. The piece is made out of silicone rubber and copper. Copper die forms were created and soldered to walls and capped with a pressure fit top- providing a very small space for tiny objects.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! I plan on changing some of the piece
and would love to hear what everyone has to say. If anyone has questions, about
the piece I will be glad to answer.

The mold making process!

HATCH Caught Blue Handed!

Our first installation followed the morning's sunrise at 7:30am. We jumped down to our location, the roof of a campus building- we later found out this was a very bad idea- and began our stenciling. Previously, while doing some tests we found that if we create a paste will water and chalk pastels, we could create a saturated dense application material. On the side of our student union, the four of us (Greg arrived later) began the first ever project of Hatch. It was going well, the material was covering beautifully yet we realized that in the future it would be more efficient to use a different application than our fingers- a brush or a 3" roller.

Four birds up and "HATCH" completed, the fun ended! We were told that the police were coming to get us down and stop what we were doing. This experience was definitely one to learn from; now we know the rules and regulations of how to pull of another installation of HATCH. If we are on campus, we will have to sacrifice the aesthetic quality be moving the piece to a horizontal surface and use sidewalk chalk as the medium.

Street Artists: HATCH now joins?

HATCH, made up of four other designers and myself, are now branching over into the realm of street art. We have left the studio where we create in our comfortable confides, and now venture out to work on an urban vertical canvas. Label us as STREET ARTISTS, maybe?

While doing a bit of research on graffiti art/ street artists, I have come to realize that those who treat their graffiti as art -not just as a representation of their rebellion to the law- explore their creativity as a way to say something. All art says something, whether it be profound or a conversation through line. As for HATCH, we connect to those artists who are trying to say something, trying to make others look up and see what they see. A visual conversation of thought and belief. The image below shows how Northern Ireland has become a hostel, and sometimes horrifying place to live. The artist has made the community deal with all it has been through and remember a time when life was brutal.

Urban/ graffiti/ street art, whatever your label, has been dealing with social issues for decades.

Yuriy Dmitriev’s concept design of “Bio Robot Refrigerator” was selected in the finalist category for competition, “Electrolux Design Lab 2010.”

This is an awesome idea but I do have some questions. What happens to the food when it decays in the gel? How do you clean it? Is the food harmed by the gel? What about porous food like bread? Does the gel ever need to be replaced- what is the life of the gel?

What about left-overs and large platters, or heavy jugs of liquid. Maybe this is perfect for bars!?

A Technology Sets Inventors Free to Dream

In the Tuesday Sept. 14th Issue of the Times, computer aided designs took the front page. The article covers examples of up and coming companies that are using technology to make products, fast, efficient, and cheaper! They are using Autodesk, Shapeways, and even the MakerBot- programs which we are using and becoming proficient in here at Towson University. When I saw in print, that the technologies we are diving into in the classroom are making headlines on the front page of world news, I couldn't be anything less then ecstatic.

The article explains how companies are using the technology to make, prosthetic limbs, air-duct systems for Boeing, and even houses. Cost are cut down in large quantities- Bespoke Innovations is able to produce limbs which are almost exact the the human bone structure for the small cost of 5,000- 6,000 dollars instead of 60,000 dollars. LGM uses the programs to make 3D models of houses and resorts at only 2,000 in one night instead of 100,000 dollars in two months. Remarkably, Contour Crafting tops them all- building full scale houses from a printer on the back of a tractor trailer. The future is truly endless!

However, it does propose the question of how many jobs would be taken off the market if a computer is doing all of the work. What happened to manual labor? Are the computer technicians filling their slots entirely? What will happen to the trade-based employees of America? Will the only careers be in technological "construction?" We are saving time and money- but what about saving jobs from becoming erased?

Also, the buildings which are being 3D printed, where are the materials coming from? Are they local? Are they cheap and easily found? If not, then what happens when a piece of the structure needs to be replaced- will the repair be extremely expensive, what if the homeowner/site owner cant not afford the repair? Will these structures be the Ferrari of homes and businesses- only available to the wealthy who can afford the cost of repair?

Hybrids May Thrive Where Parents Fear to Tread

For some, the above picture of Eclyse the zorse may seem like a fraud; yet according to the New York Times, Eclyse was a natural creation from a zebra and a horse who became very close to each other. The article explains how hybridization is a very common occurrence in the biological world which we fail to realize. "The familiar sunflower has provided great examples of adaption by hybrids." There are three kinds of sunflowers now thriving in our ecosystems which have been created from a natural merge between the common sunflower and the prairie sunflower:sand sunflower, desert sunflower, and puzzle sunflower. Unlike the zorses, beefalo, and mules which are infertile from the genetic cross, "...one lesson from the sunflowers appears to be that hybrids may succeed f they can exploit a different niche from their parents."

The interesting connection between the hybrids of our flora and fauna to humans, is that naturally we are hybrids as well; not just hybrids of different races and cultures, but different DNA. "Our DNA is 99.84% identical to Neanderthals, the small difference indicates two lines slpit off from each other about 270,000 to 440,000 years ago." Which means, that at one point in time, the Neanderthals (concentrated in Europe & Asia) and the Homo sapiens (concentrated in Africa) crossed paths with each other and "dated."

I find it interesting to see what the world creates. By some accident or slight action, the world can change for eternity- the human. What if the Homo sapiens and the Neanderthals didn't cross paths? What would be different about the genetic makeup of human beings today?

Also, it intrigues me that the zorse can have such a harsh change in skin pattern. You wouldn't think that the genes would pool in a way which results in the drastic pattern change. Imagine if humans blended this way?

Chinese Remake the ‘Made in Italy’ Fashion Label

On a parking lot in Prato stood a rack of "pronto moda" or "fast fashion" clothes. Retailers from across Europe come in vans to buy the clothes, which carry the "Made in Italy" label, for resale back home at a large markup.

In the city of Prato, Italy high quality fashion has been produced for decades upon decades. The label "Made in Italy" has always been highly regarded in the world of quality excellence. However, workers fear that Chinese immigrants are "taking over and ruining" their businesses. The article goes on to discuss how Chinese immigrants are creating their own Chinatown in the center of Prato- using illegal methods and strategy to make cheep mass produced clothing and tagging the clothes as "Made in Italy." "The result is a toxic combination of residual fears about immigration and the economy."

Officers identified and separated groups of Chinese immigrants after the police sweep in Prato.

Illegal immigrants are not only a problem in the United States- they swarm everywhere. The article was a bit discriminatory at some points- being a bit too pig headed- but besides that, they posed great facts. The chinese sector is making 1.5 million dollars a day by creating this mass fraud and increasing illegal fabric imports, human trafficking, prostitution, gambling and money laundering by enslaving/employing 25,000 illegal immigrants. In late June, 24 were arrested and 100 businesses were investigated.

I feel that people in this world will do anything to cut corners and get a cheep fix. Whatever happened to being a hard worker and truly earning the life you live? Fraudulence is extremely active throughout the world- whether the people conducting it are illegal or legal. Everyone always looks for the loop hole and it is sickening.

Read First Then Use to Kill Weeds

I found this light hearted, yet effective article this morning in the Times. Why not try using newspaper to kill, and eliminate the potential invasion of weeds. Use the process of moving down a plot (the journalist used an old-reel mower- a great decision instead of a fume emitting beast), laying down used newspapers in sheets of four (wet to stay down and accelerate the process of decomposition), shovel on four inches of compost then plant your seeds, bulbs, or bushes. The newspapers will act as a barrier from the grass below and incoming weeds once it decomposes. The article also stated a organic weed killer (from weeds blowing in on the wind) Spritz with a gallon of vinegar mixed with 2 tablespoons canola oil and one tablespoon liquid Ivory dish detergent- spray when the weeds are still sprouts.

I think this is a great change for gardening- which I am realizing is a topic which strikes home to me. The true "recycling" of the newspapers aid in the cycle of life. I am trying to push people to start growing their own produce- vegetables, fruits, greenery, herbs, what have you- in an effort to save money and raise the quality of life. There is great satisfaction in enjoying a homemade salsa with friends which almost every ingredient has been grown by your very own hands. The ultimate reward! Also, you would be ingesting completely organic produce without the expensive grocery cost, as well as decreasing the amount of pollution from the shipments from farm to store. Not everyone has a green thumb, but is fun to try.
Tip- Basil will grow anywhere as long as it has sun and water!

6 charged in human trafficking scheme involving Thai workers

On Friday the 3rd, CNN covered the news about the "largest human-trafficking operation ever to result in charges in the United States." Four out of the six charged worked as job recruiters for Global Horizons Manpower Inc., which is based in Beverly Hills, California. About 400 people were convinced to come to the states to work and gain ample amounts of funds and leave their lives in Thailand. Instead, they were forced to "provide cheap, compliant labor." Trapping them and making them live and work in deplorable conditions nauseates me. Who are you to think you have the right to own hundreds of people and force them to be under your command? Now pay for what you have done and live your life caged in without any freedom- feel a portion of what it felt like for those innocent people.

Design thinking is a process for practical, creative resolution of problems or issues that looks for an improved future result. It is the essential ability to combine empathy, creativity and rationality to meet user needs and drive business success. Unlike analytical thinking design thinking is a creative process based around the "building up" of ideas. There are no judgments early on in design thinking. First off, Cradle to Cradle and Do Good Design: My drugs of choice

The start of the book was quite intense with really drawing the reader in by placing them in their surroundings and continuing to state all that is environmentally wrong with the situation. How in your daily life so much needs to be changed. In example, a rug is described which has been made out of "recycled" plastic bottles. "The rug is still on its way to a landfill, just stopping off at your house en route" Why not simply cut out the use of water bottles from the beginning (future Guerrilla idea!)

Another idea which was sparked is why do companies who are going in the right direction all of a sudden veer off the road into a large massive pit!? Products which are made to aid the fight against the war with ourselves (becoming green- the Green War/ Humans against Human Product) are too expensive for the average american to afford! Example, Benjamin Moore has a line of household paints out which have a low VOC- driving down the right path- yet they are very expensive- falling into the massive pit. This past June, I wasn't able to buy the low VOC paint ( which i really wanted to buy) but you cant get everything you want. I could not afford the expensive green product, so i had to buy the cheap paint which is currently harming my body with every breath i take. So changing the world and what products we use/make, is not only about the composition of the product, but the marketing and how it can enter the lives of the majority of American people. There was Designing for the Other 90%, but what about Obtaining for the Other 90%.

Fiji water pats themselves on the back for being the "green, pure" water- yet they are flying aircraft carriers all around the globe transporting plastic bottles and charging (for a six pack) the same amount of money Brita charges for 1 refill- which filters well over 900 glasses of water in three months. Sounds like a scam to me.

Social Design- flip it around, designing the social world. It is a way that we- the citizens of the all nations- improve human life with what we are given. To use the tools provided to us- resources, knowledge, determination, and creativity to change our world from the past to the present and looking into the future. With every minute that goes by, human existence as we know it- is changing; the world doesn't stop spinning. Therefore, those who inhabit it must keep evolving. Designers have the duty to update all mankind on how to change with the evolving universe. Products and mentalities are how we keep ourselves here on earth- thriving and transforming with time.

On Sunday, an article was published about the ongoing controversy of immigration and protecting our borders. "Border Sweeps in North Reach Miles Into U.S." presented the issues of racial profiling, abusing our rights, and unjust aggression on an train line running along the northern American border. Boarder Patrol clammers onto the trains asking those they feel who are suspicious whether or not they are U.S. citizens and if they can produce papers. I agree with the need to control and protect those who reside in our country; yet, I do not agree with the way that the search is being conducted. Walking up to a flashlight in your face, with no idea of what is going on is a startling circumstance whether you may be a citizen or illegally residing. Do I think that searching should be preformed- yes. But not in a manner that is random, sporadic, and harsh. If "our mission is to defend the homeland, primarily against terrorists & terrorist weapons," then the patrol should protect us in ways which do not question our rights. If one is checked- all should be checked.

"Would a simple "tea bag" of carbon and antimacrobial fibers that costs just pennies be the solution for quickly filtered drinking water on the go? Scientists from Stellenbosch University in South Africa hope they've found the solution to drinking water problems in rural African communities. Lacking water sanitation services, the communities can turn to a simple water bottle that uses cheap, removable sachets to clean their drinking water. And comparing the clean water solution to tea bags isn't far off -- they're using the same material that go into producing bags of rooibos tea.

But what sets these bags apart are the fibers inside. Lining the interior of the bags are ultra-thin nanoscale fibers that filter out contaminants, and held within the bag are active carbon granules that kill bacteria. Science and Development Network reports that the excitement behind the idea comes from the fact that all the components used are inexpensive. One sachet can clean a liter of very polluted water; once used, it can be quickly replaced and easily disposed of.

"The nanofibres will disintegrate in liquids after a few days and will have no environmental impact. The raw materials of the tea-bag filter are not toxic to humans," she added. Each bag should cost around three South African cents (just under half a US cent). Anybody can use it anywhere; it's affordable, clean and environmentally friendly," said Jo Burgess, manager of South Africa's Water Research Commission."

In June I spent the day in Philly with friends; one of the places we stopped was the PHILADELPHIA MAGIC GARDEN on South St. It was completely and utterly breathtaking. Every surface- wall, floor, ceiling, pass-through- was created with found objects. There were dolls, bikes, bottles, plates, vases, sculptures, just to name a few. I felt as if I was dropped into the most beautiful garbage truck ever.
